🦑 Best Squid Jigs for Port Phillip Bay
If you’re just getting started with squid fishing, choosing the right jig can feel a bit overwhelming. But after years of fishing Port Phillip Bay, I’ve narrowed it down to a system that works — and works well.
For me, catching squid is simple. Go where they are, use the right jig, and you’ll usually fill your bag. Unless the weather is off or you’re using the wrong gear, squid fishing in the bay is usually a sure thing.
✅ My Favourite Squid Jigs (Size 2.5)
I almost always use size 2.5 jigs in Port Phillip Bay. They sink at the right speed and stay in the strike zone, even in current. Here are my go-to picks depending on the conditions:
- Low light (early morning/late arvo): Harimitsu VE-22 AR
- Midday (bright): Rui KR-103 2.5
- Sunny sky: White jig (Shimano Sephia or Rui KR-43)
- Fiery red sky: Rui KR-153 Orange
- Cloudy & dark: AR or KR-147
When I go squid fishing, I always fish with two rods. That’s why I use multiple jigs — all with similar action but different colours to match the light. These six jigs are proven. Even my kids can catch squid using them!
