Which Bay Fires First — Port Phillip or Western Port?
You’ll read everywhere that Western Port fires weeks before Port Phillip. That’s not really what’s happening.
They come into both bays at the same time. What’s different is how hard they are to find once they’re there.
Why Western Port produces earlier
Western Port warms up sooner, and it’s a much smaller body of water. Fewer places for fish to be, and a bite that switches on a bit more readily. So more fish get caught there early — but that’s about opportunity, not the fish arriving first.
Port Phillip isn’t empty, it’s big
Port Phillip is an enormous bay by comparison. The reds are absolutely in there at the same time — they’re just harder to locate in that volume of water. I’ve caught them in both bays in August, and in both bays in September, across multiple years.
Early season is a boxes-ticked game
You can get a bite in any month if you’re in the right place at the right time, but the windows are short and you need a few things lining up at once:
- A window where they’ll bite — high barometer, something to switch them on.
- A tide that works for the bay you’re fishing.
- Being where the fish actually are — the hard part early on.
Early in the season they arrive in small schools, and those schools get bigger and bigger through September. Around the end of October the mass schools come in, and that’s when it stops being a hunt and starts being a season.
So which bay fires first? Honestly, it comes down to how much skill you’ve got and how well you know the bay you’re fishing. Know your marks and you’ll get them early in either one.

Rigs – When and Why
- Shallow/early season (<7 m): Simple running rig.
- Slack/slow tide (7 m+): Paternoster rig to keep baits in the zone.
- Change-up: Reedy’s Scallop ULTRA when fish are fussy.
Most of the time it’s a running rig with an easy clip, small dropper, swivel, short 40 lb leader to hooks.
Why I Avoid Lumo Sleeves Early
They draw too many seven-gill sharks and rays early season. I’d rather bust them off fast and get back on the snapper.

Port Phillip: pilchard & squid year-round; add silver whiting from 15 °C.

How I use it during snapper season
I look at the pressure first, and down here higher is better — a 1030 beats a 1020. Rising, steady or falling matters far less than people think; if it’s high, they’ll usually still go. Then I match that against the tide — big runs for Westernport, lighter flow for Port Phillip — and pick the window from there.

Port Phillip suits open drifts and schooling fish; Westernport has stronger tides and fishes well along edges and channels.

Fish tide changes and the first hour of flow. Midday bites happen — don’t leave early.
What rig should I use for squid or whiting baits?
A snelled twin-hook or an ULTRA paternoster with a running sinker works best.
When is the 2026 season at its best?
Late September kick-off, peaking October–December, often running into early summer depending on water temps.
What barometer reading is best for snapper?
Down here, high is what you want. A 1030 beats a 1020, and a 1020 beats a 1010. That’s the southern hemisphere — if you’ve read that a low barometer fires fish up, that’s northern hemisphere and freshwater advice, and it doesn’t translate to our bays.
In my experience it doesn’t much matter whether it’s rising, steady or falling. As long as the pressure is high, they’ll normally still bite — especially through snapper season. Check where it’s sitting for both bays on the Live Fishing Window.
How do I know when to go fishing?
Honestly? If it’s between October and December, just go fishing. It’s snapper season. They’ll bite at some point in the day — even after a front — usually around a tide change or the last of the run-in, depending which bay you’re in.
There are too many scenarios to give one answer. But if you want to stack the odds, look for high pressure and a tide that suits your bay. Both are on the Live Fishing Window.
