Should You Turn Off Your Transducer While Fishing?
The answer is… it’s complicated.
🧠 Let Me Explain It Properly
I spend a lot of time on the water.
I run about 340 hours a year on my Mercury, and that’s just driving.
That doesn’t include sitting at anchor, waiting on a bite, or moving around chasing fish.
Transducer setup used for reading bottom and fish
So realistically?
👉 My transducer is running a hell of a lot more than that
🔊 Why I Leave Mine On
👉 I want to know what’s happening under the boat — all the time.
- snapper fishing at anchor
- drifting for whiting
- moving every 10 minutes
- even trolling
👉 That’s the difference between guessing… and knowing
⚠️ The Part No One Talks About
👉 The more you run your transducer, the faster it wears out
📉 What It Actually Looks Like When They Wear Out
Transducer after heavy use over time
- arches aren’t crisp anymore
- fish are harder to pick
- everything looks washed out
Fresh transducer ready for clear sonar readings
⏱️ Why No One Turns Them Off
- It takes time to boot up
- You lose your nav
- You’re moving constantly
💰 Is It Worth Wearing It Out?
👉 I don’t care.
💬 Final Thought
👉 I’d rather wear it out than miss what’s happening under the boat.
