📢 Reedy’s Report Snapper Fishing — September 2025 (Victoria)

Welcome to Reedy’s Report Snapper Fishing for this weekend across Port Phillip Bay, Westernport. Snapper are starting to show, whiting are running strong, and trevally are mixed in. I’ve linked YouTube videos so you can see exactly how I fish these areas at this time of year. Let’s get into it.

🎣 Port Phillip Bay Snapper — Reedy’s Report Snapper Fishing

Landbased fishos are striking early wins around the piers and rock walls. Schools are pushing through the Heads in the morning and, by sundown, some have already made it up towards the city — that’s how far and fast these reds can move.

Best chance for success now is shallow: 4–7 m depending on time of day. At night, no deeper than 4 m. There’s a reason landbased anglers catch at night and boaters often don’t — you’re too deep. Great shallow areas to try: Altona, Webb Dock, Williamstown, St Kilda, Brighton, Hampton, Point Cook. Avoid the pack unless the mega school shows up; the bite window will be short and sharp.

Inshore pinkies will be everywhere (and a bit annoying), but you need to be among them to find the big reds. Keep checking baits — don’t just sit back, as pinkies will strip you quickly.

Portarlington: Mostly resident fish mixing with migrating schools. Shallow water there has produced bites, but with the angling pressure it’s still slow. I’d still push north if you’re chasing that one big fish.

You don’t need to be told what GPS mark to fish. If you head to any of the areas I’ve mentioned, get on the edge of the reef and use your sounder. You can even look at Google Maps to locate reef edges. Fish them with confidence and you’ll find success. As much as I’d love to hand out marks, if I gave one, 20 boats would sit on it. Maybe one would catch fish and make me look good on “Reedy’s Mark 🤣🤣” — but the rest would miss out. That’s not how I do things.

The false reports and garbage I see online — all to make money — is horrible. Sure, I could sell GPS marks, but for what? That’s not what I’m about. I want to help people genuinely, with nothing expected in return. If you see value in Reedy’s Rigs tackle, that’s great. If not, that’s fine too. I’ll keep telling the truth, no sugar coating.

Also — there isn’t a scenario where I’d prefer a lure in Port Phillip Bay right now. I actually designed some lures 2 years ago (still unreleased), but the industry pushes lures because there’s no money in bait fishing. Same with much of the content you see online — it’s paid promotion. Nothing wrong with that, but it doesn’t always reflect what works best. With me, it’s clear: I own Reedy’s Rigs, I tell it how it is.

🎣 Westernport Snapper — Reedy’s Report

Same story, different stage. Strong currents shift schools around, but they still track north. Your best bet is the top end, where fish stack up. Don’t overthink it, just put the baits in and put in time.

Hot tip: With the big run-out tides this week, Lysaghts is worth a crack. Fish the last two hours of the outgoing tide at night — especially on the big lows — and you’re a real chance.

History also suggests fishing for whiting down the southern end, straight out from Stony Point Pier (around 7 m) on the start of the run-in tide. Be there at low tide and fish the first two hours until the bite stops. Then move to the Spit — start shallow in 2 m and move up with the tide. This method has landed me easy bags in the past. But to be honest, right now my mind’s all about snapper, not whiting.

🎣 Whiting at St Leonards (Reedy’s Report Snapper Fishing weekend notes)

Whiting are going strong at St Leonards. You get decent cover from a westerly here because it’s shallow. If you can fish the last light and time the tides, you’re in with a real chance. On Sunday the 28th, there’s a decent run-in tide in the afternoon — that’d be my pick for a good whiting session there.

🎣 Trevally & Whiting in Both Bays

This time of year, both bays also produce plenty of trevally and whiting. In Westernport, they mainly push up the top of the channels while you’re fishing for snapper in 4–7 m. A burley pot on the bottom is a must. In Port Phillip, trevally often hang at the entrances to harbours and shallow bays like St Kilda. Right now, I’ve caught both snapper and trevally this week in both bays.

What a great report. You tell it like it is, no bs.
I wouldn’t be giving out any marks either. You have done the hard yards, you reap the rewards. You just have to ask yourself “how did I start?”. Good luck with the comp. I hope everything goes well for you. You and Tibby Flora are 2 of the best presenters in both bays. Good luck to you both, and also to Izzy. Another great fisher person and ambassador for the sport we all love. Cheers
