Description
Scallop Rig – Pre-Tied Snapper Rig, 10 Pack
Ask around any boat ramp on Port Phillip Bay and you’ll hear the same name: the Scallop. It’s one of the most popular snapper rigs in Victoria, and in snapper season you’ll see it hanging off rods on boat after boat. This pack gives you 10 pre-tied Scallop Rigs in the hook size of your choice, from 4/0 to 8/0, tied on 80lb.
It’s a simple, strong paternoster rig with an attractor flasher that draws big fish like snapper in to the bait. And there’s more to it than meets the eye. There’s a reason the Scallop catches more fish, and we’re keeping that to ourselves.
What you get
- 10 pre-tied Scallop paternoster rigs
- Reedy’s Rigs Dominator lumo circle hooks – choose 4/0, 5/0, 6/0, 7/0 or 8/0
- 80lb leader, strong enough for big snapper and gummy shark
- Attractor flasher to bring fish in
- Long tag at the bottom so you can set the rig to suit where you fish
Which hook size?
- 4/0 and 5/0 – the go-to sizes for Port Phillip Bay and Western Port snapper on pilchard, squid and whiting heads.
- 6/0 – a step up for bigger baits and bigger reds.
- 7/0 and 8/0 – big baits, big snapper, gummy shark and offshore reef.
What you’ll catch on it
The Scallop is built for snapper, and it’s strong enough to land whatever else turns up. Fishos regularly catch big gummy shark on it, plus kingfish, mulloway, flathead, trevally, salmon and reef species.
Where to fish it
Port Phillip Bay is where the Scallop made its name, and it works just as well in Western Port, offshore, and anywhere bottom-feeding fish are found. Mud, sand, rubble or reef, you set it up to suit the ground.
How to rig it
- Tie it on. Take the rig out of the packet and tie the top of the rig to your main line.
- Set your hook height. The tag at the bottom of the rig is left long on purpose, because everyone fishes different ground. Cut it to length for how close you want your bottom hook to the bottom, then tie a loop in the end.
On the mud in Port Phillip Bay, set it so the bottom hook sits about 100–200mm off the bottom. Fishing over reef, leave it longer to keep your baits up out of the snags. - Add your sinker. Attach a sinker to the loop. Use the lightest sinker that still gets you to the bottom in your area: light on a slack tide or in shallow water, heavier when the current’s running or you’re fishing deep.
How to bait it
Good baits are a King George whiting head pinned through the lip, a pilchard chunk or a squid ring. Pin the bait through just once so it dangles naturally off the hook. That way it moves with the rig and nothing gets twisted up.
How to fish it
- Drop it to the bottom and take up the slack until you can feel the sinker.
- Keep the rod in a holder or in your hand and watch the tip.
- Don’t strike. The Dominator is a circle hook, so when a fish loads up the rod, just wind steadily and let the hook roll into the corner of its mouth. It sets itself, and the fish stays hooked.
- Change your sinker as the tide changes so the rig stays put on the bottom.
