Squid fishing in Port Phillip Bay is fantastic fun and easy to do. On this page, I’ll share a few tips and a video to help you catch squid.

Squid fishing is pretty simple: tie on a squid jig and fish a size between 2.5–3.5 depending on the current. The key is keeping the jig near the bottom.

Question: How do I find squid spots?

Squid live around weed beds and broken ground. In Port Phillip Bay, most squid grounds are shallow — roughly 3–8 m. Use Google Maps (satellite view) and look for dark patches in the shallows. I’ll show an example below.

Question: What size jig & colour should I fish in Port Phillip Bay?

Question: What’s the best way to cast a squid jig on the boat?

There’s no single “right” answer. Wind, drift speed, and current all affect your drift and can change quickly. Cast in the direction that lets you keep your squid jig near the bottom.
