🔥 Snapper Report – Port Phillip Bay Fishing Update

Snapper season is in full swing across Port Phillip Bay! We’ve been tracking the movement of the big reds, and it’s clear they’re on the chew and heading south. This week’s sessions off Frankston and Mount Eliza delivered some serious action, with fish caught up to 8kg — and it’s only heating up.

📍 Where We Fished

We launched out of Frankston at 4AM, and the ramp was mint — no sandbar dramas this time, credit to the council for keeping it cleared. The first session was in 16.5m off Frankston, and the next morning we headed to 17m off Mount Eliza, where the reds were stacked and hungry.

🎣 What Worked

  • 🔥 Best Bait: Silver Whiting (heads pinned once)
  • 💥 Best Rig: Reedy’s Ultra Rig with 7/0 Lumo Hooks
  • 🐟 Depths to Watch: 18–21m during midday sessions

The Ultra Rig smashed it again, especially during slower bites. While snell rigs caught fish, the Ultra’s bright glow and movement clearly stood out in the deeper water.

📺 Watch the Action

Watch young Cooper’s moment as he chases his first big snapper. I won’t spoil it — but it’s worth the watch!

🚨 What to Expect Leading into Christmas

This is one of my favourite times to fish the bay. The reds tend to push south through 15–17m off Mornington or track wide toward the Southern Channels. These migration lanes are prime for intercepting big snapper moving out post-spawn.

🧠 Brett’s Tips for Consistent Hook-Ups

  • Burley hard and steady — especially if anchored on reef or rubble
  • Sound up fish arches or Christmas tree-like structures
  • Fish reef edges in daylight — fish move here for cover, even when the bite is slow
  • Use at least 2 types of bait: silver whiting, pilchard, squid, scad, Aussie salmon, or flathead fillet
  • Always run a mix of rigs — one snell, one Ultra Rig
