Celebrating the Snapper Season in Victoria, Australia

The Snapper Season in Victoria, Australia, is now in full swing!

Each year, the Snapper migration begins around September or October and continues through to the end of May. Fishing has long been an integral part of the local culture here in Victoria and across Australia. Our fishing tradition dates back over 40,000 years, to when the Aboriginal people first fished these waters.

Fishing remains one of Australia’s oldest and most cherished traditions, with the Snapper being Victoria’s most sought-after and prized fish species.

Snapper thrive in the saltwater environments of Victoria and can be found in abundance across the state, whether you’re fishing in the deep waters off Portland or in the shallow inlets and bays like Lakers Cutting and Point Lonsdale.

Snapper Season in Victoria 2025

In 2025, Snapper season in Victoria is now in full swing. You can target schools of Snapper year-round in the state, but the largest fish are typically found off the Port of Melbourne and Corio Bay at this time.

Early Migration and Snapper Locations
Fishing for Snapper is easier during the early stages of migration. During this time, the Snapper schools follow a predictable path. You will find them running through Queenscliff, Mt. Martha, and Mornington, as well as through Lonsdale Bight and along the Eastern Seaboard.

Prime Snapper Season
From September to December, Victoria offers plenty of Snapper, especially the biggest and most beautiful fish. This period brings in large numbers of Snapper, making it the best time to fish.

The Importance of Fishing to Victoria’s Economy
Fishing is crucial to Victoria’s local economy. It creates many jobs across the state. The Victorian Government’s Target One Million plan supports sustainable fishing practices.

Recreational fishing contributes at least $2.3 billion annually to the state’s economy. According to an Ernst and Young report commissioned by the Recreational Fishing Licence Trust Fund, recreational fishing supports tens of thousands of jobs in Victoria. In 2013-14, fishing contributed $307 million to the northwest, $1.3 billion to the Port Phillip region, and $381 million to the Gippsland region.

In 2025, the numbers will likely rise. The government previously forecasted that recreational fishing would add $7 billion to Victoria’s economy during the 2018-2019 Snapper season.

Supporting Local Businesses
Agriculture Minister Jaala Pulford emphasized that Port Phillip Bay generates around $1.3 billion annually. By phasing out commercial netting in the bay, the government hopes to attract more anglers. This will boost local economies and support small businesses.

Of the $7.1 billion fishing contributes to Victoria’s economy, $3.9 billion includes indirect benefits, such as to tackle shops. Fishing also creates up to 33,967 full-time jobs in the state, with even more part-time and recreational fishers.
