Snapper Rig FAQ
🎣 Rigs (Paternoster / Starter Pack)
What is the best rig for snapper in Port Phillip Bay?
There is no single “best” rig. Different rigs work on different days—conditions, time of year, and tide all matter. Over years of fishing for snapper, these are simply the best two for PPB because of simplicity and results:
- Snell rig with 40 lb leader: you tie it yourself (I’ve made YouTube videos). Everything you need is included.
- Reedy’s ULTRA Rig: you can’t tie this one—I’ve put our “secret herbs & spices” into it. There isn’t much public info about the build on purpose to avoid copies. It just works. Look around—half of Melbourne’s boats are running them.
What size hooks come on the Paternoster rigs?
5/0. It can catch all sizes of snapper.
Can these rigs be used in both Port Phillip and Westernport?
Yes.
How many fish can I usually catch on one rig before changing it?
My personal best is 11 big snapper on one rig before I swapped it. I don’t recommend pushing it that far. A rig itself won’t fail—most issues are user error. Before dropping I always check:
- Knots (the rigs use snell knots—tighten under load, but don’t play with the fly or it can loosen)
- Drag setting
- Baits
To this day I haven’t lost a fish due to a rig failure.
Do the rigs work with squid, pilchard, and silver whiting?
Yes.
🪝 187 Circle Hooks
Why are Reedy’s 187 Hooks good for snapper?
Super sharp—sharper than any hook on the market. That’s why the hook-up rate is so good.
What’s the difference between Lumo and Standard 187 Hooks?
Lumo has a glow finish—my favourite. It’s the 1-percenters that count on tougher days. Standard is non-glow but just as strong and sharp.
Are 5/0 hooks the right size for most snapper in Victoria?
Yes—100%.
Do 187 hooks set themselves, or do I need to strike?
Often they’ll set themselves—if the rod buckles and the drag runs 10–15 m, good chance the hook is in. Some days you’ll need a light strike. Like all tackle, there’s a learning curve.
🧵 Leader Line (40 lb Reedy’s Leader)
Why use 40 lb leader for snapper?
Great all-round size for PPB and Westernport—most common weight locals use.
Is 40 lb leader too heavy for Port Phillip Bay?
No.
How abrasion-resistant is it around reef and structure?
A decent amount. Heavy reef is rare where you’ll fish for PPB snapper; good boat positioning helps avoid rub-offs in the first place.
Can I use this leader for gummies or kingfish?
Yes, but step up to 65–80 lb for extra abrasion resistance and confidence.
