We just wrapped up an unforgettable Portland fishing holiday — and what a mission it was! Our goal? To catch Southern Bluefin Tuna on topwater lures… and we nailed it on the first day. But this trip was about more than just fishing. It was a full-blown family adventure packed with laughs, local sights, and time on the water with the kids.

🐟 Big Tuna on Day One – Straight Into the Action

Nothing beats that moment when a tuna smashes your surface lure — and it happened on day one of our Portland fishing holiday. We were a week out from the full moon, and as expected, the bite was on fire. It was reel-screaming, rod-bending mayhem, and the boys were absolutely buzzing.

🏡 Family Stay at Portland Holiday Village

We booked a cabin at the centrally located Portland Holiday Village, and it was perfect. Comfortable, clean, and family-friendly, it gave us everything we needed to relax after long sessions on the water.

The kids had room to play, the town was walkable, and it made the whole trip run smooth.

🚃 Scenic Fun: Portland Cable Tram & Carnival Vibes

Portland isn’t just for anglers — it’s a brilliant place for a family getaway. We took a ride on the historic Portland Cable Tram, which runs along a 7.4km track beside the sea. The views were unreal, and the volunteers running it had loads of local knowledge.

We also stopped by the War Memorial Lookout, visited some local museums, and caught a carnival on the foreshore. The boys had a blast, and we barely had a quiet moment all trip.

To top it all off, my dad came over on the final day to hang out — and Zac headed out with Mathew Hunt Fishing Charters. It was the perfect way to finish the trip: expert crew, great weather, and another crack at the tuna.

There’s nothing like a tuna blowing up on a topwater lure—and we didn’t have to wait long. Just a week before the full moon (which is usually a good bite window), we were locked in on some solid fish. Big runs, big energy, and big smiles all round.

We stayed at Portland Holiday Village, right in the middle of town. The cabin was spot-on—clean, roomy, and perfect for a family fishing getaway. After a big day on the water, it was the perfect spot to recharge.

🚂 More Than Fishing – The Portland Cable Tram & Family Attractions

This town has way more going for it than just big fish.

We jumped on the Portland Cable Tram, which runs 7.4km along the coast. The views are epic, and the history along the way makes it a great ride for the whole family. Plus, there’s the Portland Maritime Discovery Centre, war memorial lookout, and when we were there—a carnival by the beach!

The kids were stoked the whole time. It’s a real mix of fishing adventure and laid-back family fun.

🧓 A Bonus to Finish – Family Time & Charter Action

On our last day in Portland, my dad came over to join us, and it was great to spend some time together before heading home. Zac also scored a spot onboard with Mathew Hunt Fishing Charters and had an absolute blast! The charter crew were legends, and it was a solid way to wrap up an already epic trip.
